Blackbaer Sustainability (formerly named ‘Bautechnik’) was the lead consultant for Ottawa’s two first mass timber residential projects, providing total management and advisory services for the technical design, procurement, building science, acoustics and thermal performance.
With in-depth knowledge of the broad range of mass timber elements and assembly techniques, we can solve design problems before they turn into expensive issues and reduce the challenges for everyone involved. Blackbaer is the only Ottawa-based firm with deep expertise on the full spectrum of mass timbers issues: building science related to timber, envelope design, acoustics, mechanical MEP for mass timber, hybrid-configuration, pre-fabrication, protection/durability concerns, sourcing, and assembly.
Healthy and Beautiful
Mass timber can be configured to exactly your design preferences. Whether through exposed beams for more of a ‘cottage’ look or with curved CLT panels to create a modern design, we’re able to bring your favourite architectural style to life.
Background
Cross-laminated timber (CLT) is an innovative engineered wood product originally developed in Europe; it is designed for increased dimensional stability and strength in framing systems. CLT is made of multiple layers of wood, with each layer oriented at right angles to one another to form structural panels. Mass timber panels and beams are prefabricated elements, which reduces labour onsite, and makes for a quick build. Beyond CLT, mass timber also includes Glulam, NLT, GLT, LVL, LSL and Concrete-Timber composites.
